Two Russian Tankers Sink In Black Sea Spilling 4,300 Tonnes Of Oil
A Russian tanker carrying more than 4,000 tonnes of oil products has sunk in the Black Sea amid stormy conditions while a second has run aground, threatening an ecological disaster, causing it to split apart about 8 kilometers off the coast, igniting immediate concern for the ecological impact of the resulting oil spill. Environmental experts warn of dire consequences should the spill reach the coastline. They assert, "If the black stain reaches the coast, contamination levels and the severity will increase," highlighting concerns for the fragile ecosystem prevalent along the Crimean coast. The accident involving decrepit Russian boats is the latest marine catastrophe to take place near the coast of southern Ukraine. The Black Sea has been a zone of intense military conflict since the start of Vladimir Putin’s 2022 full-scale invasion of the country. The oil spill from damaged tankers has contaminated a long stretch of sandy beaches along the Russian Black Sea shoreline, polluting the air and threatening wildlife in one of the worst ecological disasters to hit the region in years. Russia Wednesday expanded an operation to clean up thousands of tonnes of oil that spilt into the sea and contaminated 50 kilometers of beaches after tanker ships were wrecked in a storm. Russia's emergencies ministry said Wednesday it was working on cleaning up 49 kilometers (30 miles) of beaches from the resort of Anapa north to the port of Temryuk, and patrolling a total of 70km of beaches. Satellite images showed that oil is still leaking out of the sunk tanker, TASS reported Wednesday, citing Crimean marine researcher Sergei Stanichny, with strong winds pushing the oil towards southern Russia's beaches.
